If you are having problems getting your music or video tostream we have the solutions here. Read on for all our tips for gettingAirPlay to work. Here’s what you need if you want to stream video or audio from an iPhone oriPad to a TV or speaker. If the process isn’t working as you would expect thefirst thing to do is check you have the following: 1. If you are planning on streaming from or mirroring your iPhone, iPad or Mac on your TV screen you will need an Apple TV. (read: How to connect an iPad or iPhone to a TV) 2. If you want to stream music from your iPhone, iPad or Mac you will need AirPlay compatible speakers (we have a round up of the best wireless speakers here, and John Lewis lists these speakers that support AirPlay here). 3. The latest software – check your iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and AirPlay compatible speaker are up to date with the latest software (note that some people had issues with AirPlay in iOS 11 – more information below). If despite having all of the above, AirPlay is not working on your Mac,iPhone, iPad or Apple TV then we have the following advice. Here are our tipsfor how to get AirPlay to work. 1. Reboot your rooter. 2. Check all the devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. 3. Make sure that there aren’t nearby devices that are interfering. If AirPlay is still not working on your Mac, iOS device, or Apple TV, we havevarious suggestions below for different scenarios. Hopefully you will find thesolution to your AirPlay problems below.
AirPlay not working following software update
From time to time a MacOS or iOS software update might actually be the causeof issues with AirPlay. This happened in iOS 11, when some people took to Apple’s forum to look foranswers when AirPlay stopped working following an iOS 11 update in September2017.There were a few suggestions as to how to fix this issue, although perhaps thereason people were confused by AirPlay in iOS 11 was that Apple had madechanges to the way that the feature appeared in Control Centre and some of itsfunctionality. If you have been having trouble with AirPlay following an iOS update, trythese steps: 1. Force restart your device – read about how to force restart your iPhone (or iPad) here. 2. Reset your network settings on your iPhone or iPad in Settings > General > Reset, and tap on Reset Network Settings.
Airplay without mirroring isn’t working
Another change in iOS 11 that confused AirPlay users was the fact that theability to Airplay without mirroring disappeared. After upgrading to iOS 11 users can only stream AirPlay content while it’s onthe screen of their device. Prior to iOS 11 users were able to stream thecontents of some apps from an iPhone or iPad to a TV – allowing them tocontinue to use the iPhone or iPad as a second screen. Perfect if you wantedto continue to use Facebook while watching a video stream on your TV.Some apps still have this functionality because they are AirPlay enabled(Netflix, Amazon, for example). However, if you are trying to stream videofrom say, Safari, you may find you can’t stream it to your Apple TV withoutusing screen mirroring.
iPhone isn’t seeing Apple TV
When you swipe up on Control Centre and tap on Screen Mirroring you should seeyour AirPlay devices – including any Apple TV that is on the network listedthere. However, you may see the message: Looking for Apple TV… If you do, then followthese steps: 1. Wake up your Apple TV – if your Apple TV is plugged in to the network via Ethernet rather than using Wi-FI you may need to wake your Apple TV up before it appears as an option for Screen Mirroring. 2. Make sure the software on your Apple TV and iOS device is up to date. Here’s how to update the software on an Apple TV and how to update the software on an iPhone or iPad. 3. Restart your iPhone (or iPad if that’s what you are trying to connect from). 4. Restart the Apple TV. 5. Ensure that AirPlay is turned on in Settings on the Apple TV. Go to Settings > AirPlay. 6. Go to Settings > Wi-FI on your iPhone/iPad and make sure that the Wi-Fi network you are connected to is the same one that your Apple TV is using. 7. Check your Wi-Fi network is working – we have advice here about what to do if there is an issue with your Wi-Fi.
Lag when mirroring Mac to Apple TV
If you are mirroring your Mac screen to an Apple TV, perhaps while deliveringa presentation or because you are making use of the extra screen, you mayexperience annoying lag. If that’s the case we have the following suggestions: 1. Click on the AirPlay icon in the menu bar and under the option Match Desktop Size To, make sure Apple TV is selected. 2. Another option is to quit any apps that could be using RAM, because making more memory available may help.
Firewall issues with AirPlay
If you don’t see the Apple TV or HomePod when you try to AirPlay it may be dueto issues with a Firewall. 1. On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy. 2. Click the lock icon and enter your administrator name and password. 3. Click on the Firewall tab and choose Firewall Options. 4. If “Block all incoming connections” is selected, deselect it. 5. Make sure “Automatically allow downloaded signed software to receive incoming connections” is selected.Hopefully you have found the solution to your problem above, if not sharedetails of your AirPlay issues below.Hands On with Apple TV Software Update 5.0On Wednesday, Apple introduced a new version—the third generation—of its AppleTV media player, adding support for 1080p video and debuting a major update tothe device’s user interface with a number of new software features. But justas welcome to many Apple TV fans was the announcement that all of the softwareimprovements in the new model are also available immediately to the previousmodel via Apple TV Software Update 5.0. Which means that if you have a second-generation Apple TV, even though you won’t be able play 1080p video, you’llgain the rest of the new features of the latest model without spending a cent.(Your Apple TV should notify you that the update is available; if not, you cannavigate to Settings: General -> Check For Updates.)We’ll have a full review of the third-generation Apple TV once we get ourhands on one, but here’s a quick look at what the new Apple TV softwarebrings. The Apple TV’s old (left) and new (right) interface
The first time you start up an Apple TV running Software Update 5.0, it’sobvious that Apple has revamped the user interface considerably. There’s stilla row of images across the top of the screen, representing whatever contentyou’ve selected below, but the previous drop-down, textual menus—Movies, TVShows, Music, Internet, Computers, and Settings—have been replaced by large,iOS-app-like icons, one for each content source: Here in the U.S., those areMovies, TV Shows, Music, Computers, Netflix, NBA, NHL, Trailers, MLB.TV, WSJLive, YouTube, Vimeo, Podcasts, Radio, Photo Stream, MobileMe, and Flickr. There’s also a Settings icon. You navigate these icons, using the Apple Remote or Remote iOS app, just asyou did the previous menus, using the arrow buttons (on the Apple Remote) orswiping your iOS device’s screen (using the app) to move the selection up,down, left, or right, and then pressing Select (on the Apple Remote) ortapping the screen (using the app) to open the selected item. Pressing Menutakes you back up a level or, in some screens, brings up the poster/cover rowat the top of the screen. (For the latter, another press of Menu takes you upa level in the menus.)You’ll find all the same options and sub-menus as in Apple TV 4.4.4 (the lastsoftware update prior to Wednesday), but most things are easier to access. Forexample, instead of having to navigate to the Internet menu to access Netflix,NBA, NHL, WSJ Live, YouTube, Vimeo, Podcasts, Photo Stream, MobileMe, Flickr,or Radio, each of those items is accessible with a single click from the homescreen. Similarly, whereas movie trailers were buried at the bottom of theMovies menu, there’s now a big Trailers button—that looks exactly like Apple’sTrailers app for iOS—right on the home screen. The new Movies screenFor most of these content channels—sorry, Roku, it’s the best word here—theexperience is similar, if not exactly the same, as it was under Apple TV4.4.4. However, the Movies and TV Shows items have each lost their home-screenmenu of options, with each menu item leading to a different screen. Instead, each of these two channels has combined its various screens into a single one, with the menu of options—Purchased, Top, Wish List, Genius, Genres, Networks(for TV shows), and Search—across the top of the screen. This makes it easierto switch between options, as you no longer have to back out of, say, the TopMovies screen to get to the Search screen; instead, you just scroll to the topof the screen and select Search. Selecting an item from this horizontal menu,or scrolling down the Movies or TV Shows screen, hides the menu; pressing Menuor scrolling back to the top of the screen displays it again. The new interface is already inspiring debate among users—I’ve seen plenty ofonline praise and complaints. But overall, I think it’s an improvement, as itmakes particular content easier to find—you don’t have to remember which top-level menu hosts the content you want to access—and it makes previously buriedcontent more discoverable. (Didn’t realize the Wall Street Journal has its ownvideo channel on the Apple TV? Now you can’t miss it. And my family loves thatRadio is now a top-level item.) And when viewing the home screen, a down-arrowpress hides the poster row to show just the 18 content icons. In fact, mybiggest complaint is that whenever you return to the home screen, theposter/image area at the top of the screen is visible. I’d prefer to alwayssee the all-icon view.I also find that the new interface makes using the Apple Remote—one of theApple TV’s biggest weaknesses—a slightly better experience, thanks to thelarge icons and reduced menu navigation. And a change that appeared in aprevious version of the Apple TV software is just as useful now: Pressing andholding the Menu button at any time takes you all the way back to the home(top-level) screen, saving you from having to press Menu, Menu, Menu, Menuwhen you’re deep in a particular menu branch. The Apple TV’s new home screen, showing just icons
